Frequently Asked Questions About OSP

Does OSP publish first-time authors?
Yes, new authors are welcome at OSP.

Do I need an agent in order to work with OSP?
You do not need an agent to work with OSP. While we offer a very small advance (very small), our standard contract is non-negotiable, so there's really nothing for an agent to do.

What does OSP publish?
OSP publishes books in a variety of genres and formats. We follow the traditional standard by offering our authors a small (very small) advance and royalties, and by providing print and electronic books, distribution, copyright registration, and other related services.

We are interested in publishing books that entertain, captivate, and/or motivate readers. We don’t particularly care whether a book fits into a predetermined category and we don’t care for gimmicks. Rather we want to publish books that are well-crafted and we want to work with authors who are driven by passion for the stories they tell.

Does OSP charge authors to publish their books?
No. Absolutely not.

What is your approach to marketing?
OSP respects and appreciates the literary spirit. We are readers first, and while we understand the need for book marketing, we believe that an author’s most important job is writing. Like other small presses, OSP operates on a shoestring budget. This requires a creative and unorthodox approach to marketing; luckily OSP is gleefully eccentric. We work with our authors to develop customized marketing plans suited to the author’s personality and lifestyle.

Is OSP an electronic publisher?
OSP uses a digital printing model that significantly reduces waste by printing books to fill demand rather than printing thousands of copies that may never find homes. This means less paper, ink, greenhouse emissions, and energy are expended. Further, the paper on which OSP books are printed uses wood fiber that comes from responsibly managed forests

Why don’t you sell books on your website? Where are they sold?
Our business is publishing books and we aren't set up to sell those books directly to the public. OSP books are available through the major online bookstores and in brick-and-mortar bookstores everywhere.
